Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney campaigned together in Ripon, Wisconsin — the birthplace of the Republican Party — in a historic event aimed at moderate and anti-Trump Republicans.

The campaign event, part of the “Republicans for Harris” effort, marked the first time Cheney publicly supported a Democrat for president. Cheney, a lifelong Republican, emphasized that her endorsement of Harris is rooted in her belief that Donald Trump is a threat to American democracy because of his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“I am a Ronald Reagan conservative,” Cheney said. “I believe in limited government. I believe in low taxes. I believe in a strong national defense, and I believe the private sector is the engine of growth in our economy.”

Cheney added, “The most conservative of conservative values is the fidelity to the constitution.”

Cheney gave a full-throated endorsement to Harris, followed by chants of “Thank you, Liz!” from the crowd.

“Vice President Harris is standing in the breach at a critical moment in our nation’s history,” Cheney said. “She is working to unite reasonable people across the political spectrum. Vice President Harris has dedicated her life to public service. I know she loves our country, and I know that she will be a president for all Americans.”

During the rally, Cheney underscored that supporting Harris is about patriotism over partisanship. She referenced her opposition to Trump’s actions, saying that the peaceful transfer of power is at the heart of American democracy and must be protected.

Cheney’s appearance was seen as a powerful statement of cross-party unity against Trump’s influence within the Republican Party.

Harris, in turn, praised Cheney’s courage and commitment to the Constitution, calling her a “true patriot.” While they may differ on policy, Harris said, they are united by a commitment to democratic values and the rule of law.

The rally took place just days after Trump’s campaign stops in Democratic strongholds in Wisconsin, underscoring the fierce battle for swing voters in the state.

The Cheney-Harris campaign stop was particularly symbolic given Ripon’s history as the birthplace of the Republican Party in 1854. Cheney’s father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and over 200 other Republicans have joined her in endorsing Harris. By appealing to these voters, Harris aims to broaden her coalition and emphasize her message of defending democratic norms.

Overall, the event in Wisconsin was not just about campaigning, but about drawing a line between upholding democratic values and rejecting what Cheney and Harris described as Trump’s dangerous rhetoric and actions. Both women called on voters to put the country first and thus hoped to attract moderates and independents in a key battleground state.
