Several former administration officials have pushed back on Trump calling his political opponents and US citizens "the enemy from within" and that he is going to use the military to go after them. Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has voiced major concerns.

“I think President Trump has learned, the key is getting people around you who will do your bidding, who will not push back, who will implement what you want to do. And I think he’s talked about that, his acolytes have talked about that, and I think loyalty will be the first litmus test,” Esper said on CNN.

Esper said such language, combined with the suggestion of using military force against political opponents, sets a dangerous precedent and goes against the principle of civilian control of the military.

"I believe Donald Trump is unfit for the presidency, for many reasons including lack of character," Esper continued. "Second, he puts himself before the country and the American people."

In Bob Woodward's book War, previewed by The Guardian, Trump’s former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley delivers his most scathing critique of Donald Trump to date, labeling the former president a “fascist to the core” and “the most dangerous person” to the United States.
